Californians Displaced by Wildfires Are Now Getting Sick With a “Highly Contagious” Virus

A Norovirus Outbreak Spreads Among California Wildfire Shelter- Teen Vogue
Following the dreadful fires in California, 45 people in four shelters have become sick with Norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness and the numbers keep increasing everyday. The virus can easily spread from person to person, through direct contact, contaminated food, water and surfaces. Most infected people develop symptoms — including diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain — 12 to 48 hours after being exposed, and recover within one to three days. The article stresses the importance of regularly washing your hands and food thoroughly. It also states that those diagnosed should stay at home until two days after they get better, to prevent the spread of the virus.

This is an example of hard news because it is to do with fire, death and disease. Teen Vogue readers will appreciate this article as it, not only informs them on updates on the fire in California (continuity), but it also respects the fact that they care about more than just hair and beauty.

This is an example of quality journalism and we could argue that it is better than some of Daily Mail’s articles. It is well written, concise and informative.
