End of year 1 exam: Learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).
WWW: There is a lot to credit here- you have clearly revised and used theories impressively (although check quotes in places!) Your Men's Health essay is excellent and that's the level we need to aim for across the board.

EBI: Question focus- your TV essay doesn't address the industry context despite showing good knowledge of the CSPs. In fact, industry is the concept to revise (e.g. Multiple choice Q)

More detailed (specific response) to the CSPs required in some places. For example. Music video, Men's Health, Maybelline.

2) Read the mark scheme for this exam carefully, paying particular attention to the 'indicative content' for each question. Identify ONE point you could have added for the first three questions in Section A:

Q1 additional point/theory:

Barthes: action and enigma codes; action code of weapon, facial expressions etc.

Q2 additional point/theory/CSP reference:

Man’s Life magazine cover:
Hegemonic masculinity – reflects hypermasculinity of 1950s

Maybelline That Boss Life advert:
Bell boy characters reflects change in culture and society –traditionally masculine role/appearance but ends advert in purple jacket putting on mascara.

Q3 additional point/theory/CSP reference:

Common – Letter to the Free:
Protest song with cultural significance: slavery, 13th amendment, ‘black codes’, documenting discrimination in society and mass incarceration, link to Selma (director/cinematographer), civil rights movement. Use of floating black square motif to build on lyrical references.

Michael Jackson – Billie Jean:
Billie Jean one of the archetypes of music video – a video that set the conventions of the genre (Goodwin – music video theory)

3) Section B requires you to write extended essays with 35 minutes and 5-7 well-developed paragraphs per question (excluding introduction and conclusion). Count the number of paragraphs you wrote for each question in Section B excluding your introduction/conclusion:

Q6 number of paragraphs: 5

Q7 number of paragraphs: 5

4) Question 6 (TV industry) was arguably the hardest question on the exam. Write a new paragraph that answers the question referring to either Capital or Deutschland 83 and the global TV industry. Use the indicative content in the mark scheme to help you.

To what extent do your television Close Study Products reflect the global nature of the television industry?
Deutschland 83 is an excellent example of a television series that reflects the global nature of the television industry. It is a co-funded production, made from German and American money. D83 did very well in America and in the UK- it received critical acclaim and was the highest rated foreign-language drama on Chanel 4 when it was first broadcast. However, it is also interesting to note that D83 did worse in it's home country, Germany. There were very poor viewing figures in Germany. This is perhaps due to the fact that Germans didn't want to relive the experience of the Berlin wall, or they may disagree with the accuracy of the historical facts.

5) Question 7 was a synoptic question that rewarded your ability to cover all four key concepts of Media. Write a new paragraph for this essay using the indicative content in the mark scheme to help you.

How has Men’s Health magazine managed to retain a loyal audience despite the impact of digital media on traditional print industries?
Men's Health has been able to maintain a loyal audience due to the brand it has created for itself. Every magazine cover follows the same winning formula- well established cover conventions, famous star for central image, cover lines and a masculine colour scheme. The issue we studied is one example. Vin Diesel is used for the central image, he is a famous actor that is well known for his muscular figure, using him as the central image gives the readers exactly what they expect. Furthermore, audiences feel part of the magazine and are rewarded for their knowledge. Their expectations are met with the amount of content inside the magazine that link to the cover lines, e.g. 'Burn calories fast'.
