Magazine practical task: Research

1) Use your lesson notes on magazine genres and conventions to view a range of potential magazine covers. Create a shortlist of three potential magazines and embed an example front cover from each one.

2) Select your chosen magazine to create a new edition for and explain the thinking behind your choice.
I have decided to create a new addition for the magazine 'Makeup Artist'. This is because this is a magazine that is not mainstream like GQ and Glamour, but rather, it is targeted specifically for those who are makeup artists or people who have an interest in makeup. The magazine covers usually feature very obscure and unique makeup looks that are very visually thought out. I believe that choosing this magazine will allow me to create a interesting cover that is very different and it will allow me to express my interest in makeup too.

3) Find three different front covers for your chosen magazine and embed them in your blogpost. Analyse the fonts, colours and typical design. What is the language or writing style? How are the cover lines presented? You need to become an expert in the design and construction of this magazine and its branding.

• The title of the magazine is written in a very large sans-serif font. The 'Artist' part of the name is smaller than the 'makeup' and is placed under the 'up'. There is a dash in between the 'make' and the 'up' which resembles a brush/paint stroke.
• Underneath and towards the right of 'makeup' there is very small writing that states 'Motion Picture. Television. Theatre. Print.'
• The magazine doesn't have a distinct colour scheme but, in every issue, the overall colours of that particular cover are matching and complementary together.
• Some of the covers of this magazine feature lots of cover lines, whereas others feature nearly none.
• The backdrop is a plain colour, but usually black or white.
• The central image is mostly a close-up or medium close-up and the model is wearing extreme makeup.
